In the early 1980s my childhood family served as missionaries in the Middle East during a civil war. Usually we were not in the line of fire because the fighting took place down in the city, while we lived up on Septiah Hill. We saw the distant explosions from a relatively distant perch. As a child I did not fully understand the suffering around me. In fact, I felt fairly safe.
