Being stopped by the police in a country where I once lived was something I never got used to. I remember my first encounter at a checkpoint where they randomly stopped people to check papers. When I was waved over, the police officer issued a fine on the spot. I didn’t know what I’d done, and there was no official way to pay the fine other than handing over the money immediately.
